Sizing Your Elbow
Have you ever wondered which size elbow to use during a gutter installation? Downspout elbows are used to offset a roof overhang. They are also placed over brick ledges, pipes, and other protrusions. The average downspout installation requires two elbows at the top of the downspout and one at the bottom. If you are connecting your downspout into a drain tile, the elbow at the bottom may not be necessary. The standard overhang on a home/building range between 8” and 2’.
The term “offset” refers to the distance between 2 connected elbows (forming an S-shape) and the wall. Find the measurements for our offsets below:
Elbow Measurements
When would I use a 85 Degree Elbow? – In our experience an 85 degree elbow is only needed in cases where the overhang is extremely long (i.e.5ft would fit this scenario)
Double offsets are used when the offset from the wall/column measures smaller than 3”.
Can these elbows be extended? Yes, all elbows can be extended (excluding the double offset) to the desired length.
